Stark County, Ohio – Sheriff George T. Maier will launch a new Community Outreach Program, “Coffee with a Cop”, or in this case Sheriff Deputies from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office.  Sheriff Deputies and community members will gather in an informal space to discuss community issues and build relationships over a cup of coffee.

This Community Outreach Program is a Nationwide Initiative utilized in over 80 cities in 24 states including Ohio.  Coffee with a Cop has done wonders for building community trust and partnership.  One of the keys to Coffee with a Cop’s success is that it removes the physical and social barriers that routinely exist between deputies and community members, allowing for relaxed interactions while building the necessary foundation of partnerships.  Informal contact in a friendly atmosphere increases trust between the Sheriff’s Office and the members of our community, which is critical to public safety and problem solving.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations.  Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street.  Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for relaxed interaction between deputies and those they serve.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about how the Sheriff’s Office operates in our community.

“We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know our deputies”, said Sheriff George T. Maier.  “These interactions are the foundation of  strong community partnerships”.  “We will be working with our law enforcement counterparts throughout the county to improve communication and understanding of the Stark County Law Enforcement community”.

The communities first opportunity to participate in a “Coffee with a Cop” event will be coming to an area near you soon.  The Sheriff’s Office is planning several events throughout the year.  Information will be provided related to an event in your neighborhood.
