"INMATE SUICIDE INVESTIGATION FOLLOW-UP"
On Wednesday, June 19, 2013 Stark Conty Jail inmate
Nicholas G. Christmas of Canton, Ohio committed suicide while in custody at the Stark County Jail.
Following the in custody death, the Stark County Sheriff's Office conducted a complete and thorough
investigation to determine if jail policies and procedures had been properly administered during the
time leading up to and including his death. In addition, Sheriff Maier requested an independent review
by the Lorain County Sheriff's Office of the sheriff's operational policies as they related to the incident
After a complete and thorough investigation regarding the incarceration of Mr. Christmas and an independent
review of all policies and procedures of the Stark County Sheriff's Office, as well as the policies and procedures
of the Correctional Health Care Group, it is clear that sheriff employees operations and those of the Correctional
Health Care Group were in compliance with all procedures.
The Stark County Sheriff's Office employee's and the Correctional Health Care Group employee's interactions
in the incarceration and detention of Mr.Christmas were consistent with the policies and procedures under which
the facility is designed to operate. Every emergency effort was made in an attempt to save Mr.Christmas's
life and unfortunately they were unsuccessful.
